Following a planning process that began in late 2011, the CRS tonight began safety patrols in the area around the River Lagan in Belfast City Centre. This is the first step in an ongoing process to provide assistance to those in difficulty in that area. The CRS Belfast Unit is currently leading the way in providing this service in support of the police and other emergency services with the support of CRS members from around the province. Sunday, 26th August 2012 - Charity swim from Scotland to Northern Ireland
A 43 year old South African, Wayne Soutter, is hoping to make waves by becoming the first person ever to successfully swim between the Mull of Kintyre and the north Antrim coastline raising funds for the CRS in the process. If successful Wayne, who now lives and works in England, will be the first person to complete the grueling 10.5 mile swim. Many endurance swimmers have tried unsuccessfully to conquer the North Channel route which is arguably one of the most dangerous and volatile stretches of water in the world. The father of two, who heads up a computer software company, now lives in London and has been testing his stamina to the limits with a hectic training schedule. On a visit to north Antrim he completed a one hour swim just off Torr Head to gauge currents and test his resilience to searing jelly fish stings. Says Wayne: ?It was as expected, fairly cold but working hard enough you managed to keep warm, So it warmed up quite quickly. What was a little unexpected was the huge number of jelly fish I saw, about one jellyfish every minute. Now and again some of them were closer to the surface and I had to swim around them. The water was good for a fairly calm day, but sometimes we got into a bit of rough water and that made hard work of it. Overall it was good ? I?m encouraged?. In 2010 Wayne conquered the English Channel at his first attempt. About the CRS Wayne had this to say, "The CRS is a fantastic voluntary organisation whose members carry out superb work in times of local need?. CRS Regional Commander Sean McCarry said, ?This will probably be the most difficult swim that Wayne will undertake in his lifetime. He will be in the water for 8 ? 10 hours and will have to contend with rip tides, jelly fish and possibly rough waters. To get to this level of fitness requires great determination?. The big swim is planned for the Lammas Fair weekend in August when the jellyfish population should be sparse and the seas calmer, however, if bad weather prevails the attempt will be put back by a few weeks. Visit the Ballycastle Community Rescue Service Facebook page for more information and updates.
